PROF. KRISHNA CHANDRA PERSAUD
Prof. Krishna Chandra Persaud is Professor Emeritus at the School of Chemical Engineering & Analytical Science at the University of Manchester (UK) and is a scholar of recognised international prestige in the fields of chemoreception, sensing and biosensor development. He received his BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1976 and his MA in Molecular Enzymology from the University of Warwick in 1977. At the same University he subsequently obtained, in 1980, his PhD in Biochemistry of Smell. Throughout his career, he has developed multidisciplinary expertise in various aspects of chemoreception, from chemistry to biochemistry and physiology, as well as in the study of organic conducting polymers, the development of methodologies for gas and odor detection, and the design of sensors and biosensors. Particularly relevant was his contribution to the development of sensor arrays for odor detection based on conducting polymers, subsequently marketed starting in 1993 by Aromascan plc and Osmetech plc, the latter later merged into GenMark Diagnostics Inc. Prof. Persaud is a member of several international scientific societies, including the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Institute of Measurement and Control, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Institution of Chemical Engineers, the European Chemoreception Organisation and the International Society for Olfaction and Chemical Sensing. He is the author of over 160 scientific publications in international journals. In the 2026/2027 academic year, Professor Persaud will hold seminars for students of the Biotechnology and Biotechnology Courses for medical, pharmaceutical, and veterinary diagnostics, as well as doctoral students of the Doctoral Course in "Sciences." Prof. Persaud's teaching activity will significantly contribute to the expansion of basic and applied knowledge in the fields of chemoreception, sensors and related biotechnological and industrial applications. Thanks to its consolidated scientific experience, advanced topics regarding the design and development of biosensors and nanobiosensors based on biological molecules will also be explored in depth, with particular attention to their industrial applications. Prof. Persaud's high scientific and international profile will therefore represent an important added value for the qualification of the educational offering of the Study Courses and the Doctoral Course in "Sciences".
